How to Enable Instagram Permissions for PULSE

PULSE automatically helps you track influencer content and brand mentions.

If Instagram Stories mentioning your brand aren’t appearing in PULSE, chances are that your Instagram account may not be allowing third-party tools like SARAL to access the message activity needed to detect those mentions.

You can usually fix this by enabling message access for connected apps directly in the Instagram mobile app.

Why is this permission needed?

PULSE relies on Instagram's connected-app permissions to detect these Story mentions. If access to messages is disabled, you may still see the Story mention normally inside Instagram, but PULSE may not be able to detect and track it.

How to enable access

We recommend completing these steps from the Instagram mobile app.

  1. Open Instagram and go to your brand's Profile.

  2. Tap the ☰ menu in the top-right corner.

  3. Scroll to the How others can interact with you section.

  4. Tap Messages and story replies.

  5. Open Message controls or Connected tools.

  6. Find Allow access to messages.

  7. Make sure the setting is turned ON.

Instagram occasionally changes the names and location of settings, so the exact wording may vary slightly depending on your app version.

Test your connection

Once message access has been enabled, we recommend testing the connection:

  1. Ask another Instagram account to publish a Story.

  2. Mention your brand's Instagram username in the Story.

  3. Give PULSE a moment to process the new mention.

  4. Check SARAL to confirm that the Story is being tracked.

It's important to create a new Story after changing the permission, rather than relying on a Story that was published while message access was disabled.

Still not seeing Stories in PULSE?

If the permission is already enabled but new Story mentions are still not being tracked:

  • Confirm that the correct Instagram account is connected to SARAL.

  • Make sure you're testing with a newly published Story mention.

  • Check that the creator is mentioning the exact Instagram account connected to SARAL.

  • Reconnect your Instagram account to SARAL if necessary.

If the issue continues, reach out to our Support team using the button in the bottom-right corner of your SARAL dashboard.
